SWIGZ Racing owner Chip Yates is out to make history when he puts on his Dainese leathers next month.

The American will be riding the "most powerful and sophisticated" electric superbike ever made at the Auto Club Speedway in California on January 9th.

He will test the machine against some of the fastest petrol-powered machines available, including Ducati 1198s and KTM RC8s, with as view to joining a competitive racing formula later in 2011.

Mr Yates then hopes to modify the bike, which uses Ohlins suspension systems, to make it the most powerful road racing machine available.

"Our scheduled power increase will make our electric superbike more powerful than a MotoGP bike . a simply outstanding reflection of the potential in electric power," he said.

Recently, Zero Motorcycle's Scott Harden said that the technology involved with electric propulsion is advancing so quickly that soon companies like his will be producing electric bikes with a 100-mile range.
