The idea of riders putting on their motorcycle clothing to take part in serious electric motorcycle races has moved a step closer.

Chip Yates, founder and rider of the SWIGZ Racing team, pitted his electric motorcycle against petrol-powered superbikes at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California at the weekend, Motorcycle USA reports.

Putting on his motorcycle leathers and taking to the track for two races, Mr Yates did more than just compete with his internal combustion opponents - he achieved a second and third place in each event.

The massive electric fuel cells on the bike are said to put 194bhp through the rear wheel and are housed in a Suzuki GSX-R750 frame.

This is ably balanced using high-performance Ohlins suspension systems, the publication notes.

Also unveiling their electric motorcycle creation recently were Mission Motors, which displayed its Mission R electric superbike at the International Motorcycle Cycle Show in California last month.
